Mechanical Engineer, Design Assurance (Marine Acoustics)
Description
MECHANICAL ENGINEER, DESIGN ASSURANCE
(Marine Acoustics)
Department: Engineering
Location: Collingwood, ON
Reports To: Engineering Leadership
Employment Type: Full-Time Permanent, On-site role
Salary Range: $95,000.00 - $110,000.00
This new role of Mechanical Engineer, Design Assurance, will take ownership of mechanical reliability and verification for marine acoustic hardware. This role closes high-consequence mechanical risks early and provides practical evidence that designs will survive real handling, deployment, and environmental conditions. You will work alongside the Mechanical Designer, Product Design and Development, who owns the day-to-day Computer Aided Design and drawing package execution. You will translate engineering risk into clear requirements, tests, and design direction that the team can implement quickly.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Mechanical risk closure and engineering direction
· Identify high-risk mechanical areas in active designs and define the evidence needed to close those risks.
· Perform and or direct focused analyses as appropriate, including structural loading, handling and deployment loads, shock and vibration, fatigue, and thermal considerations where relevant.
· Define and validate sealing and environmental protection strategies in collaboration with Product Design, Manufacturing, and Quality.
· Provide clear engineering guidance and design constraints that can be incorporated into the released design package.
Verification planning and practical test strategy
· Create and maintain mechanical verification plans for active products and variants, including acceptance criteria and test methods.
· Partner with test and validation resources to define fixtures, instrumentation, and execution details for mechanical checks.
· Support first-article and qualification builds by defining mechanical checks, reviewing results, and recommending corrective actions.
· Ensure verification is right-sized: practical, measurable, and aligned to customer use cases and environment.
Failure analysis and corrective action
· Lead or support root cause investigations for mechanical failures, leakage, damage during handling, or recurring manufacturing defects.
· Define corrective actions, ensure changes are validated appropriately, and confirm recurrence has been reduced.
· Maintain a practical lesson learned register that informs standards and future designs.
Standards that make the business faster
· Develop and maintain a small set of mechanical design standards and guidelines that improve consistency and reliability, such as sealing rules, fastener strategy, corrosion control, and strain relief practices.
· Create reusable verification templates and checklists for recurring product types and interfaces.
Scope boundaries and role interfaces
· The Mechanical Designer, Product Design and Development owns Computer Aided Design models, production drawings, and day-to-day design package execution.
· This role does not own routine drawing creation. It provides engineering direction, analysis, verification planning, and design assurance that is incorporated into the released documentation.
· Advanced Manufacturing owns machine shop output and fixture fabrication. This role supports by defining critical-to-quality features and repeatability requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Degree in Mechanical Engineering or demonstrably equivalent capability.
· 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering for rugged or harsh-environment hardware, with evidence of reliability-focused work.
· Ability to scope and execute practical analysis and verification work, and translate findings into clear, actionable design direction.
· Strong understanding of tolerances, fits, materials, sealing concepts, and manufacturability constraints.
· Clear communicator who can write actionable feedback and work effectively with designers, technicians, and cross-functional partners.
High Valued Assets
· Experience with marine or underwater hardware including corrosion considerations and sealing strategies.
· Experience with shock and vibration environments and designing for handling and deployment loads.
· Experience in quality-managed environments where evidence and traceability matter.
· Familiarity with machining and fabrication constraints, fixturing principles, and production realities.
